When I talk with anybody about Essential Estimating for Cabinet Vision, there's a voice in my head that reminds me of a movie scene that's somehow related to the conversation I'm trying to concentrate on. I guess that makes me either certifiablly insane or a certifiable movie nut. Either way, this time its that scene from Good Will Hunting when Matt Damon's character presses a piece of paper up against the bar window and gloats to his rival suitor about the phone number he scored minutes earlier.
"How you like them apples?" he teases as he shows off the prized phone number through the glass.
So this is my turn to gloat. Several years ago, I figured out that, contrary to popular Cabinet Vision mythology, you don't actually have to draw up a house full of cabinets, let alone a kitchen full of cabinets, in Cabinet Vision just to arrive at the bottom line of an estimate.
Somewhere along the historical Cabinet Vision trail, the notion that Cabinet Vision was useful for estimating was thrown to the side of the side of the trail like an empty bean can. That happened because a lot of users didn't stop to read the directions. They just opened up Cabinet Vision like it was a brand new slot car set on Christmas morning. "I wanna draw a kitchen." said Billy the 8 year old cabinet shop owner.
And, just like that, the undiscovered, under-utilized, and under-rated estimating Cabinet Vision module was thrown into the rubbish bin with the rest of the wrapping paper, ribon and bows.
For years, the idea that Cabinet Vision wasn't designed to create custom cabinet estimates in a timely manner was retold and passed down to the next generation like a Grimms' Fairy Tale. And like all fairy tales, it's simply not true! The fact of the matter is that Cabinet Vision was intentionally designed to deliver complete custom cabinet estimates, commercial estimates, and residential estimates, quickly and efficiently without having to draw up anything.
